Franklin Skin and Laser
Dr. Steven Bengelsdorf is a graduate of the Boston University Six-Year Medical Program, where he earned a combined BA/MD degree magna cum laude, with honors in Anatomy and Physiology. He completed his surgical training at the Boston University Surgical Residency Program, where he gained experience with fiber optic and energy-based devices in the operating room. With a strong interest in achieving surgical outcomes with less morbidity, he pursued advanced training in minimally invasive surgery at Beth Israel Hospital in New York City, providing the foundation for his lifelong commitment to advancing laser and light-based technologies in patient care.
Dr. Bengelsdorf went on to serve as a civilian contractor at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, home of the 101st Airborne Division, where he provided surgical expertise to support active military members and their families at Blanchfield Army Community Hospital. In 2005, he founded Franklin Skin and Laser, which has grown over the past 20 years into the leading physician-managed laser center in Williamson County, Tennessee. As Medical Director, he has developed expertise in advanced laser applications, including skin resurfacing, treatment of vascular lesions, tattoo removal, and comprehensive aesthetic medicine. He has been sought out for his opinions by multiple companies, including Allergan, Candela, and Acclaro Medical, often using his resources to test new devices and protocols.
Beyond his clinical practice, Dr. Bengelsdorf is committed to scholarship and education. He served as the medical reviewer for the textbook Lasers and Light Therapy and was invited faculty at the International Master Course on Aging Science (IMCAS) in Paris. He also contributes regularly to the IMCAS website, sharing collegial insights that reflect his global engagement in advancing aesthetic medicine. Additionally, he sponsors an internship program for undergraduate pre-medical students, providing hands-on exposure to clinical practice, research, and medical technology, including lasers and aesthetic medicine.
He has shared his insights through national television appearances, including “The Doctors,” and in major publications such as The Wall Street Journal, Wired Magazine, and the Nashville Business Journal.
A Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, Dr. Bengelsdorf serves as a Physician Delegate to the Tennessee Medical Association and has been an active member of ASLMS for nearly 20 years. His candidacy for the ASLMS Board reflects his dedication to advancing the Society’s mission by promoting research, education, and innovation in the safe and effective use of lasers and energy-based devices. He looks forward to bringing his blend of surgical expertise, innovation, and mentorship to help further advance the mission of ASLMS.
